It may surprise you to hear that there are no pumpkin patches in Manhattan. Or, maybe it won't. Ha! I didn't think there would be a "farm" type but thought maybe some sort of make shift "patch" with hay bails and pumpkins would exist. NOPE. For a die-hard-autumn person like me, an October without a pumpkin patch just isn't October! Thank goodness for car rentals. A couple of weekends ago we got a car and headed out of the city to have our first ever New York pumpkin patch experience. We decided on a farm/orchard just 45min outside of the city called Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard.
Harvest Moon had everything! It was definitely crowded, but they had so much going on that the lines weren't long and it never felt overwhelming. They had a live band playing country/folk music, food trucks, fresh cider donuts and cider, farm animals, a pumpkin patch, apple picking, bouncy houses, face painting, etc! The kids had the BEST time. I feel like we all did.
After we decided to explore some of the Catskill Mountains, about 45min away from the farm. We were unable to find a vacancy in nearby hotels (apparently the "leaf peepers" beat us to it about 8 months ago...and if you don't know about "leaf peepers" neither did I, until this year. They are basically die-hard fall foliage watchers and travel for the leaves every year...my kind of people!!). Anyway, we were only about 1.5hrs away from our apartment so we decided to split the trip and sleep at home (save some cash) and drive back to Catskills the following morning.
The next day we did the Catskills Mountain Railroad. I have to say, this is the PERFECT train for kids. The ride is about 55minutes, you can sit inside or outside (or wander freely, its not assigned seating). It is just the right amount of time with one small 15min pit stop in the middle. You don't travel far but you can see the beauty of the mountains without being stuck in the car. We sat by a sweet lady on the train who said she takes her grandson every year- they do the train, then a pumpkin patch and then dinner. It was so sweet! I loved this day so much. It was a beautiful weekend with perfect fall weather. Next year we can do Vermont, we just have to book our hotel before all of those leaf-peepers!
And just for a little humor...we tried to get a family photo a few different times and FAILED. Here are a few of our attempts:
